One of the first things you have to do is come up with a name for your LLC. The name has to be unique and it can’t be too similar to another business name that’s already registered with the state. To make sure your LLC name is available, you have to do a name search with the Secretary of State.
Here’s how to do an NC LLC name search:
1. Go to the North Carolina Secretary of State website.
2. Click on the Business Entities tab at the top of the page.
3. Scroll down and click on Search Business Entities.
4. Type in the name you want to use for your LLC in the Entity Name field and click Search.
5. If your LLC name is available, you’ll see a message that says “No results found.”

Enter the LLC Name
To start an LLC in North Carolina, you need to choose a name for your company. The first step in this process is to do a thorough search of the records of the North Carolina Secretary of State to make sure that your desired LLC name is available.
The Secretary of State offers two ways to search for LLC names: by using the Business Registration Database Search function on the Secretary of State website, or by calling the Business Registration office at 919-807-2225.
When searching for an available LLC name, it is important to keep a few restrictions in mind. First, the name must include the phrase “Limited Liability Company” or one of its abbreviations (LLC, L.L.C., or Ltd. Liability Co.). Second, the name may not be identical to the name of any other business entity registered with the North Carolina Secretary of State. Finally, the name must not include any words that could be misleading about the nature of your business.
Once you have found an available LLC name that meets all of these criteria, you are ready to move on to the next step in forming your North Carolina LLC.

The North Carolina Secretary of State’s Office does not require LLCs to have a particular name, so feel free to be creative. Some people choose to use their own name, while others use a made-up word or phrase. You can also include numbers or special characters in your LLC name, as long as it is still available.
